The West End Neighbours Association held a press conference yesterday criticizing the city’s approval of a 26-storey tower at Georgia and Cardero they say is in conflict with the coal harbor community plan.

The WEN members say that the city did not consult the community about additional density added to the building that was formerly zoned at a maximum of 13 storeys.

On Sep 17 the city held an open house about the project and on Oct. 22 the urban design panel approved the rezoning proposal.

They say in that time and to date the city has made public no information about any community amendment contributions by the developer, Bosa properties. The city also contributed a portion city owned land to the project that the WEN says is in conflict with the Coal harbor community plan.

NPA City Council candidate Rob McDowell attended the press conference and said  he can see why the residents frustrated with the development.

“This is another example of the city approving these developments again and again without proper input from the community,” McDowell said.

McDowell said this project is tricky because it is in an area sitting between the West End and Coal Harbor community plans.

“These people are angry because they feel they are being kept in the dark,” McDowell said. “And their not wrong.”
